Artist, Deborah Gooch.
Art has always been part of my daily existence. I come from a family of artistic people; my great grand father was a sculptor, my dad a painter, my brother is a writer and artist. Myearliest memories involve paint, paper, creative instruction and encouragement. I spent many hours as a child and young adult working intently on projects for various contests and exhibitions, occasionally being frustrated to tears. I use that same intensity today in my oils and acrylics.
Coming from a commercial art background, my work retains an illustrative quality. I incorporate line drawing into my paintings, often as an instinctive, intuitive
response. Working mostly from "family photos", I try to capture the deeper essence of the image, a response to the subject's social condition, usually comical sometimes sad.

My figurative works tend to be large and bright. The composition is simple and strong though generally painted over a complex under painting. I love the varied characteristics of paint and utilize these characteristics in my work.
For me, art must evoke an emotional reaction. I am not concerned if the viewer's reaction is the same as mine, I want my work to be personal, thought provoking and relative to the viewer's personal interpretation.
